Single Phase vs Three Phase Power: Which Does Your Site Need?
If you're organising temporary power for a construction site, one of the first questions is whether you need single phase or three phase. Getting it right avoids delays and unnecessary costs.
Single phase power runs on one active wire and is generally suited to smaller residential builds — running hand tools, lighting, and general site amenities. It's the more common (and typically cheaper) option for standard home construction.
Three phase power delivers power across three active wires, giving you a higher, more stable capacity. It's usually required when a site is running heavier equipment — larger power tools, welding equipment, cranes, or multiple trades drawing power at once. Larger residential builds, commercial sites, and multi-unit developments often need three phase from the start.
How to decide: the simplest approach is to check with your electrician or builder about what equipment will be running on site and at what capacity. If in doubt, ask — supplying the wrong phase part-way through a build means downtime while it's corrected.
We supply and install both single and three phase temporary power poles, with certification and paperwork handled as part of the hire, so your site is ready to go and compliant with Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) requirements from day one.
